Photo Resolution for a Photo Puzzle: How Sharp Is Sharp Enough?
What resolution you need for a photo puzzle, why crop matters more than megapixel myths, and how print gates stop soft images becoming disappointing cardboard.

"Photo resolution for printing" and puzzle-specific variants are practical buyer questions. Soft images make soft puzzles. The internet still spreads megapixel myths. Here is the version that matches how print actually works.
Resolution is about pixels across the print
A puzzle is a print that gets cut. What matters is how many pixels you have across the width and height of the finished board, not a marketing megapixel number alone. Cropping a 12 MP image to a tiny face leaves you with far fewer pixels on the subject.
DPI without the cargo cult
Print pipelines often aim for roughly 150–300 pixels per inch depending on viewing distance. A wall-viewed puzzle is more forgiving than a magazine held to your nose. If an upload tool warns you the image is low resolution, believe it — that warning is cheaper than a muddy 1000-piece board.
What usually goes wrong
- Screenshots of photos.
- Heavy social-app compression.
- Extreme crops of group shots to one face.
- Filters that smash detail.
How to choose piece count from photo quality
Strong, sharp, high-contrast photos support higher piece counts. Soft portraits should stay at lower counts. More: piece count guide and which photos work.
Our approach
When you upload for a Puzzlvent puzzle, the flow is built to stop you paying for a print the photo cannot support. Fix the image choice before you fall in love with a piece count.
Quick checklist before you order
- Use the original file from the camera roll, not a forwarded chat compress.
- Check faces are large enough in the crop.
- Prefer daylight-balanced images.
- If it looks soft at 100% on a monitor, it will not magically sharpen on cardboard.
Good puzzles start as good files. Resolution, crop, and contrast decide whether the cut feels satisfying or muddy. Trust the preview, not megapixel folklore.
