"How to store jigsaw puzzles" usually means one of two problems: the dining table is held hostage by a half-done board, or the cupboard is a tower of crushed boxes. Both are solvable without buying every gadget on the market.
Unfinished puzzles: protect the work
You have three honest options:
- Portable board with cover — best if you move the puzzle between rooms.
- Roll-up felt mat — good for mid-size boards; secure the ends so pieces do not migrate.
- Leave it and defend the table — fine for a weekend, rude for a fortnight.
Sort spare pieces into labelled zip bags by colour block before you roll or cover. Future-you will not remember which blue was "sky left".
Finished but unglued
If you might re-do it, photograph the complete image, then break it down into the original box with a note of time-to-finish. If you will never re-do it, either glue and frame it or pass it on — storage for dead weight is how cupboards fill up.
See our guides on gluing and what to do when you are done.
Collection storage that does not crush boxes
- Store boxes flat, never on a corner spine under heavy weight.
- One puzzle per box — no dumping spare pieces from another set.
- Climate: dry room, away from radiators and damp garages. Cardboard warps; prints fade in sun.
- Vertical magazine files work for small kids' puzzles; large adult boards want flat shelves.
When storage should be digital
If the reason you are stuck is space, not love of cardboard, play the image online and only print the boards you want to keep. A personalised photo can live as a shared room first — then become a physical order when the table is free.
Start from a photo or pick something ready-made in the shop.
Travel and gifting
For gifts, ship in proper packaging, not a reused cereal box. For travel, a roll-up mat plus a bagged edge set is enough for a holiday cottage table. Missing-piece insurance: photograph the sealed bag before packing.
Good storage is boring on purpose: flat boxes, dry shelves, labelled bags, and a plan for unfinished boards. Everything else is merch.
