The first wedding anniversary is paper. It is a tradition with a practical origin — paper is fragile, like a marriage in its first year — and it leaves you with a problem, because most paper things are either a card or a document.
Why most paper gifts disappoint
A paper gift fails when the material is the whole idea. A blank notebook is paper. It is also a notebook, and your partner knows the shops sell them for six pounds. The tradition is not asking for paper; it is asking for something made of paper that could not have been bought for anyone else.
That distinction is the whole brief. Use it and the gift lands; ignore it and you have bought stationery.
Twelve that work
- A framed print of a photograph nobody has seen. Not the wedding photo everybody has — the one from the morning before, or the reception at 1 a.m.
- A jigsaw made from a photograph of the two of you. Paper by construction, and it takes an evening to do together rather than thirty seconds to unwrap. Ours are pressed paperboard in a tin, from £22.
- The newspaper from the day you met, not the day you married. Everybody does the wedding date.
- A hand-drawn map of the route you walked on a specific day, ordered as a print.
- A book they mentioned once, with the date and where they mentioned it written inside.
- Concert or match tickets — paper, and an evening rather than an object.
- A recipe card in a grandparent's handwriting, scanned and reprinted properly.
- A calendar built from your own photographs, one per month, which keeps giving all year.
- Origami, if you can actually do it. If you cannot, this is not the year to learn.
- A letter. Genuinely — a long, specific, unsentimental letter is remembered longer than most objects, and it costs nothing but nerve.
- A photo book of the first year, which is different from the wedding album.
- A puzzle of a place you are about to go, given alongside the booking.
Choosing the photograph, if you go that way
The gift that fails here is the one with a bad source photograph. A screenshot of an Instagram post is 1080 pixels wide and will print soft at any size worth framing. Use the original file from the phone or camera. Our upload page tells you which sizes a given photo can carry before you order anything, and refuses the ones that would print badly — see photo resolution for a photo puzzle.
When paper is the wrong idea
If the first year has been hard — a bereavement, an illness, a move that did not work — the traditional-material game can read as flippant. Skip it. The tradition is a prompt, not an obligation, and nobody has ever been thanked for following a rule at the wrong moment.
